It also means a lot more heat and a lot more sun, which could lead to sunburns, or even worse, heatstroke, and the risk of getting heat stroke grows the longer you’re exposed to the sun. Thankfully, there are some very simple things you can do to help prevent that from happening.
Be Sun Smart
- Spending some time in the shade during the summer can help your body manage the outdoor heat. By not staying in direct sunlight constantly, you can prevent not only heatstroke, but also sunburn.
- Make sure that you take regular breaks from whatever activity you’re doing. If you’re hiking for example, take 5 minutes to relax every so often. That will give your body a moment to rest and allow you to take stock of how you’re feeling.
- The most important thing you can do to help prevent heat stroke is to hydrate. Drinking enough water will keep your body temperature regulated, as well as replenish fluids that you use up when you’re out in the heat. Having enough water in your system will also help protect you from fatigue and headaches, both of which can happen when you’re in the sun too long.
Hydration is important year-round, but especially during the summer months when the temperatures are highest. Because heatstroke can come on gradually, you might not even realize you’re having one at first. And by the time you’re experiencing symptoms such as excessive sweating, rapid heart rate, fatigue, difficulty thinking and more, you’ll need immediate medical attention.
